Smart Satellites Secure SW Updates for Spacecraft Applications & Services

Satellite software updates and payload application and software updates are often unencrypted. They represent a significant weakness in the overall security of the satellite operations. Satellites also typically have a common internal communications bus. Malicious or misbehaving software running on one subsystem can heavily affect the overall operation of the spacecraft causing from DoS to catastrophic failures of the whole satellite.

REWIRE is going to investigate two usage scenarios in the context of Smart Satellites. One scenario of this use-case, involves deployment of applications, services, software and security patches on a spacecraft in a secure manner, while the second concerns communication among separate payloads, with malicious/compromised or misbehaving payloads present on the same bus.

Through these two pilot deployments REWIRE will enhance the security posture of the smart satellites’ application domain from multiple perspectives.
